Dr. Christopher Martin is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health, Department of Community Medicine, West Virginia University School of Medicine.

He completed a Bachelor of Science from McGill University, a Medical Doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Health from the University of Alberta. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in Occupational Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and is board certified in occupational medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He came to West Virginia University in July of 1999 following the completion of his residency in Occupational Medicine at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Martin is an active educator within the School of Medicine, nationally and internationally. He coordinates and is the principle lecturer for the second-year medical school courses “Epidemiology and Biostatistics” and “Health of the Public”. In 2002, Dr. Martin was selected by the class of 2004 to receive the MacLachlan Award for teaching excellence and in both 2003 and 2004 he was nominated to receive the Distinguished Teacher Award for the School of Medicine. In 2004, he was the recipient of Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education. He is active teaching several courses in the Masters of Public Health degree of the Department of Community Medicine in Occupational Health, International Public Health and related topics and serves as the Director for the Occupational Medicine residency within the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health. Dr. Martin is also a regular lecturer at the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the national professional association for occupational health physicians.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Martin has published book chapters on bacterial hazards in the workplace, non-ionizing radiation and occupational lung disorders. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications on the hazards of welding and toxicology of metals. Recent research interests include the effects of vibrating power tools on the upper extremities.

Dr. Martin serves as an ad hoc member of the CDC’s Occupational Safety & Health Study Section as well as the Special Emphasis Panel for NIOSH. He is a member of both the Occupational Medicine and Core Exam Subcommittees of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and served as President of the TriState Occupational Medicine Association from 2002-3. He served as President of the Residency Directors’ Section of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine from 2004-5.
