The responsibility for the operations of WVUH is delegated by the Board of Directors to the President Bruce McClymonds. Selected biographical information is listed below for Mr. McClymonds and for other principal members of the Administrative Staff.
Bruce McClymonds
President
Bruce McClymonds is the President of West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. Prior to his appointment, Mr. McClymonds served as the Hospital’s chief financial officer from 1989 to December 1994 and as the Hospital’s chief operating officer during 1995 and 1996. He is responsible for all aspects of the Hospital’s operations and plays a significant role in strategic plan development and implementation. He has also played a critical role in the organization’s various managed care activities. Prior to moving to WVUH, Mr. McClymonds spent nine years in the healthcare specialty group of Price Waterhouse’s Pittsburgh office. He also served as the chief financial officer of a community hospital in the Pittsburgh area. Mr. McClymonds received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Accounting from Grove City College and is a certified public accountant. Mr. McClymonds serves as a lecturer in the Masters of Public Administration Program at West Virginia University.
Dorothy Oakes, RN, MSN
Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive
Dorothy Oakes assumed the role of Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive, West Virginia University Hospitals, and Administrator of West Virginia University Children’s Hospital on February 3, 2003. Prior to her arrival in West Virginia, she was employed at WakeMed in Raleigh, N.C. for 28 years, during which time she served in various senior management positions. Ms. Oakes is also Director, Clinical Services, in the School of Nursing at West Virginia University. She earned her Masters in Science of Nursing from Duke University, and a Bachelors in Science of Nursing from the University of North Carolina.
Stephen L. Tancin
Vice President for Ancillary & Support Services
Stephen Tancin joined West Virginia University Hospitals in 1984 and has held the following positions in his tenure at the Hospital: Director of Cardiology, Director of Clinical & Anatomical Laboratories and Executive Director of for-profit and non-profit subsidiaries, Vice President for Support Services, Vice President for Ancillary and Support Services. Mr. Tancin earned his Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration form the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh and he received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology from Lehigh University.
Gary Murdock
Vice President of Planning and Marketing
Gary Murdock is the Vice President of Planning and Marketing for West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. His current duties include oversight of strategic planning, internal and external communication, identification and implementation of program development initiatives, and marketing of WVUH, University Health Associates and the Schools of the WVU Health Sciences Center. From 1992 to 2000, he held several different positions at WVUH, including Financial Analyst, Programming Analyst, Director of Health Information Management and Vice President for Program Development. Mr. Murdock graduated from WVU in 1985 with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. After working in the textile industry for several years, he returned to WVU for graduate studies and became a teaching fellow in the School of Engineering. In 1992, Mr. Murdock joined WVUH in the finance area.
Rich King
Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Rich King, serving as Vice President and CIO for West Virginia University Hospitals and University Health Associates, previously served as Corporate Director of Information Technology Services for the West Virginia United Health System. Mr. King has a long history with the Hospital, System, and UHA. Mr. King returned to the organization in May 2002, subsequent to serving as Director of Information Services for WVU Hospitals. In addition to Mr. King’s tenure throughout the System, he served five years as Assistant Administrator of Information Services at CAMC in Charleston, WV from 1997-2002. Mr. King holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Organizational Management with a concentration in Information Systems from Alderson Broaddus College.
Kevin A. Halbritter, MD
Interim Chair Medicine/CMIO
Kevin Halbritter assumed the role as Interim Chair Medicine/CMIO at West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. in June 2008. Dr. Halbritter also serves as Medical Director for the Medical Access Referral System (MARS), WVU Referral Office and the WVU Healthline. In addition, Dr. Halbritter is an active member of the WVU Medical Staff and holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Halbritter received his Bachelor’s degree and Medical degree from West Virginia University.
Charlotte Bennett, MSN
Vice President Human Resouces
Charlotte Bennett is Vice President of Human Resources at West Virginia University Hospitals. She joined the hospital in 1974 as a staff nurse. Since that time, she has served in numerous management/leadership roles in Nursing. She also serves as adjunct faculty in the WVU School of Nursing. Ms. Bennett earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Nursing from West Virginia University. In 1995, she completed courses in managing change in healthcare settings and managing teams and projects at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Robert L. Brandfass
Vice President and General Counsel
Robert Brandfass serves as Vice President and General Counsel of West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. as well as General Counsel of West Virginia United Health System, Inc. He was previously a partner in the law firm of Kay, Casto, Chaney, Love & Wise, Charleston, West Virginia. Mr. Brandfass was a member of the law firm’s Management Committee and Chair of the law firm’s eleven-member Health Care Practice Group, which provided legal representation to health care providers. Mr. Brandfass is a member of the West Virginia State Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association and the American Corporate Counsel Association. Mr. Brandfass earned his J.D. degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law and graduated Cum Laude with an A.B. in Politics and Government from Ripon College.
Niti S. Armistead, MD, FACP
Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety
Niti Armistead assumed the role as Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety at West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. on July 1, 2006. As part of her role as VP of Quality and Patient Safety, Dr. Armistead also leads the Department of Care Management, Risk Management, Safety, Patient Advocacy, and Quality Outcomes. In addition, Dr. Armistead is an active member of the WVU Medical Staff and holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Armistead received her Medical degree from the University of Maryland and completed her Residency at the Medical College of Virginia.
Shane Rine
Assistant Vice President for Support Services
Shane Rine assumed the role of Assistant Vice President for Support Services, West Virginia University Hospitals, on August 7, 2006. Prior to his arrival in West Virginia, he was employed at Aramark Healthcare Management Services, as Support Director. Mr. Rine has also served as Environmental Services Director at both UPMC Shadyside Hospital and Bethesda Health System, while working for Aramark. Mr. Rine will have administrative responsibility for Environmental Services, Nutrition Services, and Linen Services. Mr. Rine has 16 years of experience working in these areas. He earned his Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Bachelors of Arts from Westminster College.
Michelle Nuss, MD
Interim Vice President, Medical Staff Affairs
Michelle Nuss assumed the role as Vice President of Medical Staff Affairs at West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. on July 1, 2008. Dr. Nuss also serves as Medical Director for the Medical Access Referral System (MARS), WVU Referral Office and the WVU Healthline. In addition, Dr. Nuss is an active member of the WVU Medical Staff and holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Nuss received her Bachelor’s degree from Perdue and Medical degree from West Virginia University. In addition to her Medical School Degree, she has also completed a Medicine and Psychiatry Residency and is Board Certified in both specialties.
Mary Jo Shahan
Interim Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer
Mary Jo Shahan assumed responsibilities as Interim Vice President and Chief Financial Officer effective 8/6/08. Mary Jo served as the Hospital’s Controller and previously served as the CFO for HealthSouth’s four facilities in West Virginia
