The WVU School of Dentistry trains predoctoral and postdoctoral dental and dental hygiene students, carries out research, and provides continuing education for dental health professionals. The School also provides dental health education and direct service to patients.
The School is considered one of the best in the nation for clinical dentistry. Students treat patients under close faculty supervision, receiving practical experience while providing care to thousands of patients each year. A new clinic facility opened in October 2001, group all specialties together and providing the latest in technology.
Master's programs in dentistry include endodontics, orthodontics, and prosthodontics. One-year residency programs in advanced education in general dentistry and general practice are available, as is a certificate program in oral surgery.
Both bachelor's and master's degree programs are offered in dental hygiene. A special program allows graduates of two-year hygiene programs to complete a bachelor's degree at WVU.
School facilities have kept pace with technological advances and include a nationally recognized pre-clinical simulation teaching laboratory and state-of-the-art instrument sterilization system. In 2000, the School became the first in the U.S. to implement the Axium system, an information management system featuring a three-dimensional dental chart and full electronic patient records.
Senior dental and dental hygiene students work in hospitals and dental offices in rural parts of West Virginia, gaining experience while providing care. The School also has facilities at the Charleston Division of the Health Sciences Center and the CAMC Ambulatory Care Center.
The School is actively involved in research. The Student Research Group earned a national award for the largest increase in membership. The School also participated in research that was pivotal to the introduction and FDA approval of a new drug to treat gum disease.
