The WVU School of Nursing is a dynamic part of the Health Sciences Center, engaging in teaching, research, and service in the art and science of nursing. The School has long offered excellent programs in nursing at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels. In 2000, it became the first in the state to offer a doctoral program in nursing as well.

The School’s curriculum prepares nurses to promote, restore, and maintain health for people of all ages and backgrounds. An important part of the curriculum involves supervised clinical experiences in rural areas.

School of Nursing faculty members are expert practitioners and teachers. They are actively engaged in research to meet the nursing care needs of West Virginia, and in service initiatives such as health promotion in schools and the identification of nursing workforce needs. They are dedicated to providing an atmosphere that fosters the development of intellectual curiosity, systematic inquiry, critical thinking, caring relationships, and lifelong learning.

Thanks to consortium programs with other institutions in the state system, the WVU nursing program is increasingly available in other areas. These institutions include the Charleston Division of WVU, WVU Institute of Technology, WVU Parkersburg, WVU Potomac State College, and Glenville State College. Some of these offer the entire four-year bachelor’s degree program; others offer only the first two years, with students completing the program at WVU in Morgantown.

In 1999, the School received a full 10-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the baccalaureate and master’s degree programs. This accreditation also applies to WVU School of Nursing programs offered on other campuses.
