The WVU School of Pharmacy seeks to improve human health by educating students and practitioners in the highest level of contemporary pharmacy practice, by conducting research, and by delivering professional pharmaceutical services directly to the community.
School of Pharmacy programs provide students with in-depth knowledge of disease states and the use of drugs in the treatment and prevention of disease. The School offers Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in pharmacy.
In addition, a non-traditional option allows interested students to earn a pharmacy degree on a part-time basis. Continuing education programs offer ongoing training to professionals in the field.
The School’s curriculum emphasizes a strong science foundation with applications to the contemporary practice of pharmacy. This includes an understanding of the chemistry and pharmacology of drugs, dosage, pharmacokinetics, pathophysiology, therapeutics, the behavioral and administrative aspects of practice, and the contemporary health-care system.
The School of Pharmacy is home to the Mylan Center for Pharmaceutical Care Education, a state-of-the-art teaching facility and clearinghouse for the circulation of pharmaceutical care information for the state. The center includes classrooms with advanced computer and audio-visual equipment, and a model pharmacy where students can gain hands-on experience and then evaluate their performance by reviewing video footage.
School of Pharmacy faculty members are involved in research aimed at advancing scientific and clinical knowledge about drugs and pharmaceutical care, including an FBI contract to study the degradation of drugs in embalmed tissue for forensic purposes. The School also recently created a laboratory for computational chemistry and molecular modeling.
