ResearchThe trauma center is committed to understanding injury, prevention and improving the management and treatment of trauma patients. Our faculty works with a multidisciplinary team to conduct research about reducing injury-related morbidity and mortality. We assist investigators in conducting trauma-related research at WVU. The information is frequently used to develop public health policies.

Morphine/Ketamine PCA Study

  1. This is a randomized study for patients suffering blunt chest wall trauma in whom a PCA will be given for pain.
  2. A total of 40 patients (20 in each arm) will be enrolled using an even odd day randomization scheme.
  3. The main objective of this study is to see if a low dose of Ketamine combined with Morphine will relieve blunt chest wall trauma pain and also improve lung status.

  1. Morphine will also be used as the standard rescue medication.

**Additional Instructions/Helpful Hints

  1. Have patient initial and date each page.
  2. Please explain and read consent to pt.  Ask if any questions.
  3. Give pt. a copy of consent and HIPAA form.  Original goes in chart.
  4. Get initial FVC before starting PCA- as per rib fracture protocol.
  5. Ketamine dose will be 1.5 mg to 2 mg Morphine- this needs typed in - with lockout of 8 minutes.
  6. Consent needs witness signature.
  7. Please be sure to order the rescue pain med as part of CHIP order (it is there for both arms).
