Takanori Fukushima, MD, is an internationally renowned pioneer in microsurgery, skull base neurosurgery, and
minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques. He also specializes in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, acoustic
neuromas, meningiomas, and cerebral aneurysms, and has developed many new techniques and surgical instruments.
"When I started in neurosurgery, brain surgery was so big - big incisions, big craniotomies, lots of
complications," Dr. Fukushima says. "Now, I work in a five-millimeter space with few complications.
Every day, I am thinking of new techniques, new approaches, and new ways to treat patients."
In addition to serving on the faculty at WVU, Dr. Fukushima is director of the Carolina Neuroscience Institute
for Skull Base Surgery and co-director of the International Neurosurgery Education Foundation. He is also a
professor of neurosurgery at Duke University. He has researched and published extensively.
Dr. Fukushima received his medical degree from University of Tokyo and completed advanced training at
University of Tokyo Hospital, Free University of Berlin, and Mayo Clinic. He is board certified by The
Japanese Neurosurgical Society. Dr. Fukushima also holds professor titles at Karolinska Institute,
Stockholm, Sweden; University of Frankfurt, Germany; and University of the Mediterranean in France. Curriculum Vitae
