Yes, you. Yes, now.

Colorectal cancer is West Virginia’s third leading cancer killer. But detected at an early stage, it can be successfully treated.

People should have a first colonoscopy at age 50, unless risk factors indicate a need for earlier screening. For many people, the recommendation will be for a colonoscopy every 10 years. Your doctor can determine what type and frequency of screening is right for you.

Colonoscopy is the “gold standard” for detecting colorectal cancer. It’s usually performed under mild sedation, so discomfort is minimal.

WVU physicians who specialize in colorectal cancer and other digestive diseases offer a wide range of screening techniques and treatments. To schedule a colonoscopy or other screening procedure, your personal doctor will need to make a referral.
