Cancer that's detected early can be treated more successfully. Because women have made mammograms a part of their health regimen, survival rates for breast cancer have been improving significantly for the past two decades.
Digital mammography is the standard for patients at the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. It's faster than traditional X-ray film mammography — and produces a sharper image with less radiation.
Digital technology is better at detecting possible problems for women with dense breasts, and women under 50, because of the better image quality. About 40 percent of women who undergo screening mammography have dense breast tissue.
The Breast Care Center's two locations — the original Health Sciences Center location and WVU Cheat Lake Physicians — are accredited by the American College of Radiology.
The digital system creates an image that can be read immediately by a WVU radiologist.
According to the American Cancer Society, women over age 40 should have a yearly mammogram to screen for breast cancer. If it's time for your annual mammogram, talk to your physician for a referral to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. Then call one of our locations to set up an appointment.
