WVU Hospitals Diabetes Education Center

At the WVU Hospitals Diabetes Education Center, we care about people with diabetes. We use the most recent practice guidelines to prevent or minimize the complications of diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association awarded the Diabetes Education Center a three-year Certificate of Recognition for its offering of high quality diabetes self-management education. This certification was redesignated in 2007. This certificate ensures that our program meets the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs.

WVUH Diabetes CenterAccording to the American Diabetes Association, there are 20.8 million people or 7 percent of the population in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are not aware that they have the disease. Each day, approximately 3,561 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications:

About 1.3 million people will be diagnosed with diabetes this year. Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States and it has no cure.
