Cardiac Rehabilitation

At The WVU Heart Institute, cardiac rehabilitation has a mission to help the patient resume as normal a lifestyle as possible following a cardiac problem, with the goal of an improved quality of life.

WVU takes a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation. Members of the rehabilitation team can include a physician, nurse, physical therapist, dietician, social worker, exercise physiologist, psychologist, education specialist, chaplain, occupational therapist, and vocational rehabilitation specialist.

This team takes an individualized approach to patient care. Each rehabilitation plan is customized to a patient's needs, and that plan is continuously evaluated.

Cardiac rehabilitation is an integral part of the care offered for patients who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, valve replacement, heart transplant, angina or angioplasty.

Our providers also recognize the psychological and emotional burdens associated with heart attacks such as depression, anxiety, fear, and anger.  We often link rehab patients with a specialist from our Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry to help them deal with the after-effects of their care.

Nutrition plays an important part in keeping a heart healthy. Our physicians and dieticians can provide patients with healthy diet counseling and assessment. Our dietary recommendations are customized based on individual needs and preferences.
