Robert Gustafson, MD, leads the multi-disciplinary pediatric heart surgery team at WVU Children’s Hospital.
The team’s specialists include professionals from the pediatrics, medicine, anesthesia, orthopaedics, and neurosurgery departments. The team performs complex heart surgery for children from West Virginia, surrounding states, and all over the world.
WVU’s pediatric cardiac surgery program performs more than 350 procedures a year. It is the only program offering cardiac surgery for children in the state.

Dr. Gustafson is a leading specialist in pediatric cardiology and the co-director of the WVU Children’s Hospital Pediatric Heart Institute.
He completed his medical degree and advanced training in general and thoracic surgery at WVU. Before returning to the state to join the WVU faculty, he also completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston.
Gustafson is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has served as a guest manuscript reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
A participating surgeon for the Gift of Life Cardiac Surgery Project, Gustafson has published and researched on cardiopulmonary bypass in infants and the use of various pharmaceuticals to treat pediatric patients.
