The West Virginia University Sinus Center works with children and adults who have complicated cases of sinus disease.
Our team includes:
These specialists work together to assess and evaluate your problem to find the right treatment for your sinus problems.
The Sinus Center team handles sinusitis in patients who may have:
The symptoms of chronic sinusitis (sinusitis that comes back often or never seems to really go away) may be vague, making the condition hard to diagnose.
Symptoms of chronic sinusitis can vary from mild headaches around the eyes and yellow to green phlegm in the throat to severe facial pain, headache, yellow-green nasal discharge, nasal congestion, chronic throat drainage, sore throat, and cough.
Antibiotics are the main treatment for sinusitis. In acute, uncomplicated sinusitis, antibiotics combined with decongestants are effective in most cases.
Our doctors have the tools to diagnose chronic sinusitis accurately and treat it effectively. CT scans of the sinuses provide a more detailed view than standard sinus x-rays. Endoscopes (rigid fiber-optic instruments the size of a straw) are used to examine inside the nose.
When antibiotic treatment fails or when complications develop, surgery may be the answer. Although standard sinus operations are still needed for certain conditions, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is usually performed.
Balloon sinuplasty is a new surgical tool used to open sinuses. This technology makes sinus surgery safer and recovery time faster.
Endoscopic surgery has its advantages:
WVU Hospitals has this technology, and our otolaryngologists have the advanced training to perform balloon sinuplasty.
The addition of computer-assisted sinus surgery and balloon sinuplasty makes the WVU Sinus Center one of the most advanced centers in the country for performing surgery on the sinuses.
Allergy services are provided by the outpatient clinic in the Physician Office Center. Allergies can cause a runny nose, sneezing, itching, coughing, and even asthma. If you have an allergy, you may be sensitive to more than one thing. Airborne substances that often cause reactions include:
Most of the time, allergies just make you feel bad, but a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis is life-threatening.
We use either skin or blood tests to determine what is causing your airborne allergy. Several medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, help decrease or eliminate the symptoms of allergies.
