Julian E. Bailes, MD

Dr. Bailes is board certified in neurosurgery. His specialty areas are cerebrovascular surgery, sports injuries and telemedicine.

Scott D. Daffner, M.D.

A native of Pittsburgh, Dr. Daffner received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. He then completed sub-specialty training in Spinal Surgery at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center. His clinical interests within spine surgery include the management of acute spinal trauma, complex revision surgery, and the appropriate use of less invasive surgical techniques. He treats a wide range of spinal disorders including degenerative disease, spinal deformity, spinal tumors, and traumatic injuries.

Sanford E. Emery, MD, MBA

Dr. Emery received his medical degree from Duke University and his specialty training at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY and at Case Western Reserve University Hospital. His special interests include spine surgery.

John C. France , MD, Spine Center Director

Dr. France is chief of the spine section. He offers minimally invasive procedures of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and traditional surgery to help patients with spinal degenerative disease (such as spinal stenosis), traumatic disorders, spinal tumors and deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis). He received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency training at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He then completed his spine fellowship at the University of Colorado.

Terrence D. Julien, MD

Dr. Julien is a surgical neuro-oncologist, a neurosurgeon who diagnoses and treats patients who have tumors of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. He also performs spinal surgeries for a variety of problems unrelated to cancer. He is experienced in radiosurgery, a procedure which uses radiation to treat tumors, facial pain, and other functional brain disorders. He also has advanced training in molecular neuro-oncology, spinal column metastasis and complex spine surgery. His specialty interests include brain tumors, computer-assisted image-guided neurosurgery, and radiosurgery. His spinal surgery interests are in cervical spine disorders (particular cervical disc disease, spondylosis, and myelopathy), spine tumors, and minimally invasive spine procedures (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar).

Dr. Julien joins WVU from Togus VA Medical Center in Maine. He earned his medical degree from Howard University. He completed specialty training at the New York University Medical Center and at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He was fellowship-trained in neurosurgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and at the University of South Florida’s H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. Julien is working on novel techniques to treat malignant primary and metastatic brain tumors using immunotherapy, radiosensitizers and nanotechnology.
