Ansaar Rai, M.D., and Jeffrey Carpenter, M.D., of WVU’s Department of Radiology, have brought a revolutionary stroke treatment to the region.

The MERCI Retriever is one of the newest stroke interventions available. Approved by the FDA to treat ischemic strokes in August 2004, the device extends the treatment window for stroke from the three hours permitted for use of lysis to up to eight hours.
