Types of Strokes

Ischemic

Ischemic strokes are the most common of all strokes. They normally occur as a result of an obstruction within a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain. There are two types:

Another cause of embolism can be an irregular heartbeat, or atrial fibrillation. This event creates a situation where clots form in the heart, break loose, and travel to the brain.

Hemorrhagic

Hemorrhagic stroke accounts for a small percentage of stroke cases and are less common than Ischemic strokes.

These strokes occur because a weakened vessel ruptures and bleeds into the nearby brain cells. There are two types of hemorrhagic strokes: intracerebral hemorrhages and subarachnoid hemorrhages, which are usually caused by aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).

Transient ischemic attacks

Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) are minor or warning strokes. In a TIA, the blood clot occurs for a short time and tends to work itself out. Despite the fact that the symptoms disappear after a short time, TIAs are indicators of a possible major stroke in the future.
