Minimally Invasive

WVU's Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery performs innovative surgical procedures that result in less pain, better cosmesis, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery for patients.

Regularly performed minimally invasive procedures include:
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
Cholecystectomy
Anti-reflux procedures
Splenectomy
Adrenalectomy
Small and large bowel resection
Liver and tumor resections
Enterolysis
Distal pancreatectomy
Tumor staging
Radio frequency ablation
Vein harvesting

New techniques are being developed. As part of our recent $75 million hospital expansion, a new operating suite has been constructed and dedicated for minimally invasive procedures.

Cardiothoracic surgeons also use minimally invasive techniques to harvest a leg vein to replace damaged arteries near the heart. Traditionally, the vein is removed from a long incision that may stretch from ankle to groin. The incision can cause serious discomfort, an unsightly scar, and the risk of infection. In the minimally invasive procedure, the vein is removed with special instruments introduced through one to three incisions, each less than an inch long. Patients recover in a matter of weeks rather than months.
