Outstanding Clinical Facilities

WVU faculty and residents see patients and perform surgery at West Virginia University Hospitals, a 450 bed tertiary care teaching facility with the latest technology, including PTE and 3-T MRI, computer-guided surgical navigation systems, Leksell Gamma Knife, and a growing set of other high-tech tools, some developed by our own faculty members.

West Virginia University Hospitals
WVU Hospitals recently opened six new operating rooms as part of its $75 million clinical expansion, including one designated minimally invasive surgery suite and a pediatric cardiac surgical suite, both of which provide the latest in technological support for our patients.

The Department of Surgery performed more than 7,500 procedures in 2005.

Part-time and full-time faculty, along with residents, provide services at Louis Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia. This modern full service facility provides all surgical services, except cardiac and transplant, to the large populations of veterans in the region. Nearly 1,000 open and endoscopic procedures are performed there annually.

WVUH also houses the region's only Level 1 trauma center -recognized by both the state and the American College of Surgeons – and advanced cardiac and critical care units

The Physician Office Center, connected to the hospital, provides modern outpatient facilities in separate specialty suites and in-house laboratory, EKG, and radiology facilities.

The Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, operated by the hospital, is the region's most comprehensive cancer facility. It includes state-of-the-art treatment options, access to current clinical trials, and some of the top cancer specialists in the nation.

WVU Charleston Division
Under the chairmanship of Dr. James Boland, the Department of Surgery of the WVU Charleston Division is the oldest regional medical education campus in the United States and a branch of the Morgantown-based institution.

WVU partners with the Charleston Area Medical Center, a 900-bed tertiary care medical center in Charleston, West Virginia's capital city. The Surgical residency program in Charleston is a five-year non-pyramidal focus designed to produce a general surgeon equally capable of practicing in a community hospital settings.

Training includes significant practice in trauma and critical care, gastroenterology (including nutrition and endoscopy), surgical oncology and cardiothoracic surgery. The average experience for chief residents finishing the program is more than 800 major cases as primary surgeon or teaching assistant.

Average total case experience per resident is approximately 1,200 cases in five years- exceeding the requirements of the American Board of Surgery in number, mixture and complexity. Call duty averages every third to fifth night, depending on the post-graduate level.

WVU Health Sciences Center East
The Eastern Division of the WVU Health Sciences Center provides community- based education in the health sciences in the nine-county, Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia -Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire, Mineral, Hardy, Grant, Pendleton and Tucker counties.

The current emphasis in the Eastern Division is on primary care and rural health. However, Dr. Jan Kletter, a community general surgeon, has a full time clinical appointment with the Department of Surgery and is working to improve the access to quality surgical care in this region.
